SEEKS OWNERSHIP OF MLB FRANCHISE, DEVIL RAYS Voter News Network publisher, Donald V. Watkins, is spotlighted as pursuing ownership of a Major League Baseball franchise, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, in numerous sports/news outlets. (Reprint of sports article from The Montgomery Advertiser) Watkins gives Devil Rays Friday deadline By: Ben Thomas Birmingham businessman Donald Watkins has set Friday as the deadline to find out if the ownership of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays has a serious interest in selling the major league baseball franchise to him. Watkins, an Alabama State University trustee, first expressed interest last week in purchasing the Devil Rays and faxed a letter to the team April 30. Still awaiting a response from team officials, Watkins faxed another letter to Devil Rays' managing general partner and CEO Vincent J. Naimoli on Monday. In the second letter, Watkins wrote that he was "ready to move forward with talks," but would like to know by the end of the business day on Friday if the Devil Rays had no interest of selling the team at this time. "If I haven't heard anything and don't know anything more by the end of the week, then I need to move on," said Watkins, who runs the Birmingham-based Alamerica Bank and also operates a privately held energy company called Watkins Pencor. more...
